Fences 6 Beta 2 Arrives with New Features

Article posted on 5/7/2025

Today we are releasing the second beta of Fences 6 with a few updates based on feedback from the community and a couple bug fixes as well. The update is rolling out now and you search for the update in the About panel of the configuration panel.

With Fences 6, we packed it full of new features like tabs, icon tint, and a lot more and thanks to community feedback, we are adding a trio of new features to improve the experience.

Drag and drop files directly on the tab header to place the file

The first new feature is the ability to drag a file to the tab header and drop it to place it into the respective Fence group. This is a bit of workflow polish and makes it easier to move files from the desktop to the desired location or from within a tabbed Fences group with a single motion.

The second new feature is showing the color of your Fence group when it is not in focus. This optional feature, which works with the segmented and rounded designs, makes it easier to quickly find a tab based on a color as many of our power users will assign a specific color for a type of app or workflow. It also has a bit of nostalgia to it as well as it reminds us of the tabs on the file folders in the cabinets that can still be found is most offices.

The final new feature in this release is the direct result of feedback from our community to let you exclude all icons that are outside of Fence groups from quick-hide. A classic feature of Fences is that if you double click on the desktop, it hides all the content for a quick distraction-free experience.

New in this release is the option to only hide the Fence groups while keeping the loose desktop icons visible. The option, under Hide in the configuration panel, is not on by default but for those who want the ability to keep their Fence groups hidden and only reveal them when needed, this is the perfect option.

Along with the threenew enhancements, there are a couple of bug fixes as well. Notably, if you are using a RTL (Right-to-Left) language, the text will now appear as expected. There are other fixes for using tabs with a locked desktop and improvements to performance when Page switching.

As we continue to iterate on Fences 6 while we push towards the general release in the near future, make sure to let us know if you have any feedback or features you would like to see in a future release. Many of the updates in Fences 6 are the direct results of posts in our forums and conversations directly with our community.

And of course, if you haven’t tried Fences 6 yet, you can learn more here and it is also included in the award-winning suite, Object Desktop.
